Case Study: Bluehost Microsoft 365 CSP Transfer for a Professional Services Firm
Background:
A mid-sized professional services firm with 75 active Microsoft 365 mailboxes had purchased its Microsoft 365 subscription through Bluehost, bundling email licensing with its existing web hosting through Bluehost’s status as a Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider (CSP). The arrangement had worked without issue for years, with one invoice and one support line covering both the firm’s website hosting and its Microsoft 365 mailboxes.
That changed when Bluehost’s Microsoft CSP Direct Bill reseller status was disabled as part of a broader change to Microsoft’s reseller program. Bluehost could no longer process renewals or manage the firm’s Microsoft 365 subscription through Partner Center. The firm’s IT contact received a notification directly from Microsoft, followed by confirmation from Bluehost that a new provider would need to be found before the firm’s next renewal date. Consequently, the firm approached Apps4Rent for assistance.
Apps4Rent’s Solution:
Apps4Rent’s Microsoft 365 consultants worked with the firm to establish the most important fact of the engagement: whether the firm’s 75 mailboxes lived on the firm’s own Microsoft tenant or on a tenant shared with Bluehost. Checking the tenant’s initial domain confirmed it was the firm’s own Microsoft tenant, which meant the correct fix was a partner-of-record (CSP) transfer rather than a mailbox migration.
As one of a select group of Tier 1 Direct Microsoft CSPs, Apps4Rent issued a scoped GDAP (Granular Delegated Admin Privileges) request, which the firm’s Global Admin accepted directly from the Microsoft 365 admin portal. The subscription transfer was then filed through Microsoft Partner Center, with legacy Exchange Online Plan 1 add-ons and standalone OneDrive subscriptions mapped to current Microsoft 365 Business Standard and Business Premium SKUs as part of the same transfer.
Benefits of Microsoft 365 CSP Transfer
- No mailbox migration was required because the Microsoft 365 tenant and all user data remained unchanged.
- Zero disruption to email, SharePoint, Teams, and OneDrive access during the transfer process.
- A smooth partner-of-record transition completed through Microsoft Partner Center.
- Improved Microsoft 365 license management through a Tier-1 Microsoft CSP partner.
- Reduced monthly licensing costs through SKU review and right-sizing.
- Dedicated Microsoft 365 expertise and ongoing support for future requirements.
Results:
Because the firm’s mailboxes already lived on its own Microsoft tenant, no email, SharePoint, or Teams data had to move. Apps4Rent engineers completed the partner-of-record transfer within the standard 3 to 5 business day window, and end users noticed no interruption to mail flow or file access at any point during the process.
After the transfer, the firm established a fixed-price billing relationship directly through a Tier-1 Microsoft CSP while reducing monthly licensing expenses through the SKU optimization performed during the transfer. The firm’s total involvement in the project amounted to one discovery call and one GDAP acceptance click.
