Microsoft Azure Quantum Is Now Open to the Broader Ecosystem

Microsoft Azure Quantum platform is now available for testing and implementation. The cloud-based platform will use quantum hardware and software resources from Microsoft partners such as Honeywell Quantum Solutions, IonQ, and 1QBit, among others. Developers, system integrators, researchers, and customers can leverage Azure Quantum to learn and develop solutions powered by the latest innovations, using familiar tools in the highly trusted public cloud. Azure Quantum is now in public preview and available to everyone with an interest in quantum computing.

What Are Quantum Solutions?

Quantum computing has become the center of attention for application developers and researchers. Azure Quantum platform, developed by Microsoft, offers Quantum Development Kit (QDK) and Q# – a programming language for expressing quantum algorithms. Azure Quantum allows you to build quantum solutions with the help of quantum technology, making calculations based on the probable state of an object, instead of just binary digits 1s and 0s. Quantum solutions will help you harness quantum computing and solve problems that are beyond the capabilities of the software developed for classical computers.

How Does Azure Quantum Enable You to Build Quantum Solutions?

The Azure Quantum services include software packages to allow developers to get started with building quantum applications. The cloud package offerings come with an open-source Quantum Development Kit, abbreviated as QDK, that enables researchers to write new algorithms with Q# – a quantum-focused programing language. Azure Quantum provides developers with a unified platform equipped with the necessary software and hardware resources, from Microsoft and Microsoft partners, to build quantum solutions. The platform also provides pre-built applications that run on classical and accelerated hardware.

Who Can Benefit from Azure Quantum?

Azure Quantum has been in limited preview since May 2020. Till now, it was only available to select Microsoft partners and customers. Now it is open to the general public and anyone can start experimenting with the service. Developers and researchers can use Azure Quantum cloud-based tools to explore, build, and deploy applications based on quantum technology that can benefit a wide range of industries. The platform will help the world unlock solutions to problems in areas such as global warming, clean energy, material design, financial modeling, traffic optimization, agriculture, healthcare, and more. Azure Quantum can also help you accelerate your research to solve problems in chemistry and medicine.

Is the Azure Quantum Platform an Alternative to Quantum Computers?

Quantum computers could help you overcome various challenges exponentially faster than classical computers, although they are still in their initial stage. However, Azure Quantum offers an alternative to developers and researchers who aren’t willing to wait for a fully developed quantum computer to be available. Microsoft is effectively scaling its services in the field of quantum-inspired technology that allows emulating some quantum features on classical computers, helping people who want to build and test quantum methods today.
