What is Hyper-V hosting?
Hyper-V hosting is a service that gives you a virtual server running on a provider's Microsoft Hyper-V hosts. Hyper-V is Microsoft's hypervisor, which divides one physical server into several isolated virtual machines. You receive a private virtual machine with its own RAM, vCPU, storage, and operating system, plus full administrator or root access, while the provider owns and maintains the physical hardware, network, and data center.
How much does Hyper-V hosting cost?
Apps4Rent Hyper-V hosting starts at $24.95 per month for the Developer plan, which is intended for development and non-production use. Production plans run from $49 per month for Bronze (2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB disk) up to $399 per month for EnterprisePro Plus (12 vCPU, 48 GB RAM, 400 GB disk). Paying annually saves 10%. Is Hyper-V free?
The Hyper-V role is included with Windows Server at no separate hypervisor charge, and it is also available in Windows Pro and Enterprise editions. What is not free is everything around it: the physical hardware, Windows Server licensing, and the time to maintain it. The free standalone Hyper-V Server edition ended with the 2019 release. What is a Hyper-V host?

Is Hyper-V hosting the same as Hyper-V VPS hosting?
The terms are used interchangeably. Both mean renting a virtual server that runs on Hyper-V instead of buying hardware. What matters more than the label is how resources are allocated. Each Apps4Rent plan has a fixed amount of RAM, vCPU, and disk space, and you get full administrator access to the virtual machine. Which is better for hosting, Hyper-V or VMware?
Neither is better in every case. Hyper-V is a strong fit for Windows-centric workloads, because it is included with Windows Server and integrates natively with Microsoft tools such as Active Directory and PowerShell. VMware vSphere is a mature platform with a rich enterprise ecosystem, but its licensing moved to subscription bundles after Broadcom acquired VMware in late 2023. For most small and mid-sized businesses running Windows applications, hosted Hyper-V offers a simpler and more predictable cost.
How does Hyper-V compare with Proxmox?
Proxmox VE is an open-source platform built on KVM, popular with Linux-heavy teams that are comfortable managing their own virtualization stack. Hyper-V is better aligned with Windows Server workloads, Microsoft licensing, and Windows management tools. With hosted Hyper-V you do not need to install, patch, or operate the hypervisor at all, because we run the hosts and you manage only your own virtual machine.
Which operating systems can I run on Hyper-V hosting?
You can choose Windows Server 2019 or Windows Server 2022, or a Linux distribution such as Ubuntu, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, or openSUSE. Do I need RDS CALs to connect multiple users?
Every plan includes 2 remote desktop connections. If more people need to work on a Windows Server virtual machine at the same time, you need the Remote Desktop Services role and RDS client access licenses, which Apps4Rent can supply. Linux servers do not use RDS CALs.
Are Apps4Rent Hyper-V servers managed or unmanaged?
Plans are unmanaged by default, which means you install, configure, and maintain the operating system and applications yourself, with full administrator or root access. If you would rather hand that work over, our server administration plans add monitoring, maintenance, and management by our engineers.
Can I build a private cloud or run nested Hyper-V?
Yes. Our nested Hyper-V environments give you a larger Hyper-V environment that you manage with Hyper-V Manager and System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM). You can create your own virtual machines with different operating systems, set up your own Active Directory and VPN, and choose whether our team manages and monitors the environment. Plans start at $295 per month.
Can I take snapshots of my virtual machine?
Yes. Hyper-V checkpoints let you capture the state of a running virtual machine and revert to it later, which is useful before applying updates, installing software, or running tests. Checkpoints are not a substitute for backups, so keep regular backups of important data as well.
Is my data secure and backed up?
Your virtual machine is isolated from other tenants at the hypervisor level, and our servers run in SOC 2 Type II certified data centers in New York City and New Jersey with firewall protection. Backups are included with every plan, and you can add offsite backup on Microsoft Azure for extra protection. Because you control the guest operating system, you are also responsible for patching it and setting your own access policies unless you add a server administration plan.
Can I run QuickBooks, Sage, or SQL Server on Hyper-V hosting?
Yes. A Windows Server virtual machine can run QuickBooks, Sage, IIS, .NET applications, and SQL Server. SQL Server Express is included, and larger editions are licensed separately. Multi-user access uses Remote Desktop Services, which needs RDS CALs. If you would rather not configure QuickBooks yourself, we also offer fully managed QuickBooks environments.
How quickly will my server be ready?
Orders are typically provisioned within hours. Setup is free, and you receive administrator or root access as soon as the server is ready. Larger or more customized configurations may take longer, and our team will tell you what to expect when you order.
Is there a long-term contract?
No. Plans are billed monthly with no minimum term and no setup fee. Paying annually is optional and saves 10%. You can move to a larger plan as your needs grow.
Can I scale my server up later?
Yes. You can add RAM, vCPU, storage, IP addresses, and remote desktop connections, or move to a higher plan, as your requirements change. Talk to our team before a major change so we can size it correctly.
